Found on CD 2 of the 2003 re-release of British Sea Power’s Remember Me (the very rare original release has recently turned up in stock again on Amazon), The Smallest Church In Sussex refers to Lullington Church, which is just 5 metres square, located near the village of Alfriston in the South Downs.
The Alfriston Churches website tells us that the church was “originally part of a much larger building, which was destroyed by fire,” a fact referred to in the lyrics, which are accompanied in the song by the church’s harmonium:
I would often go there
To the tiny church there
The smallest church in Sussex
Though it once was larger
Should you want to visit Lullington Church, it’s open to visitors daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm (or dusk). Services are held in the Summer months only (as there’s no electricity for light or heating) on the third Sunday of the month at 3.00pm, from April to September.
