Mr Sifter sold me songs, when I was just 16
But now he stops at traffic lights, but only when they’re green
Truly awful lyrics, but that didn’t stop them helping Sifters Records in Didsbury, just outside Manchester, from becoming famous after its name check in Oasis’s Shakermaker single.
Rumour has it that the lyrics were penned by Oasis’s songwriter Noel Gallagher when the taxi he was in stopped at the traffic lights outside Sifters on the way to record the song, but judging by some of the band’s other lyrics (”Live for your toys, even though they make noise. Have you ever played with plasticine? Even tried the trampoline?“), there’s every chance that they were the fruit of a lengthy writing session.
Sifters is open from 10.00am till 6.00pm Monday to Friday (closes at 1.00pm on Wednesday) and 9.30am till 5.30pm on Saturdays.
